Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Thanksgiving is almost upon us and I am counting my blessings.  We hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with plenty of food, family and all good things!

I thought I'd share this article that appeared in the November/December issue of Stages Magazine this year. Hope you enjoy it.

Home For the Holidays

It is hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us.  Where HAS the time gone? We’ve had a lovely unusually long spring and a milder than usual summer to enjoy.
This year seems to me to have sped by more quickly than ever…Thanksgiving and Christmas are around the corner with the New Year right on their heels.

Before we get all caught up in a blur of pumpkin pies, tinsel, miniature lights and Christmas shopping, let’s take a moment to think about how we want our family’s celebrations to unfold.

Fall festivities culminating in a Thanksgiving feast are the kickoff to our seasonal activities.  Friends and family gather for time together, a wonderful meal, and memories shared.  Some indulge in football, some take the opportunity (and the break from school) to take a quick vacation, others like to get a jump on their Christmas shopping, and some enjoy a little extra relaxation with family at home.

It’s appropriate to also take time to get our homes, yards and gardens ready for these festivities.  We often have beautiful weather here in our area during November and December; we should all take advantage of that and get our outdoor areas ready.  Pull up summer plants, which are probably worn out and pitiful looking by now.  Put down a fresh new layer of mulch if you haven’t already this season.  It always amazes me how much fresh mulch adds to the appearance of flowerbeds.  Your garden center will have a variety of cold hardy plantings for you to choose from.

Add some outdoor lighting now that days are getting shorter.  Strings of lights across your seating areas are a very popular way to add light.  Another way to add light is the use of outdoor lamps. Fans are also available in several different looks.  They help when the afternoon sun gets unseasonably warm.
